| It's been a busy week in West Rogers Park. Last Friday I invited over Avi and her family for shabbat dinner. The day spent in the kitchen was rewarded by positive reviews. And then Rich knocked on the door to tell us about a fabulous double rainbow that practically filled the Eastern sky, and we all went out to gawk and say the appropriate blessing. On Sunday we went over to the Buchbinders and went for a walk with them through the Northwestern campus. We walked through the Shakespeare Garden there, which I had never seen before. It has all kinds of plants that are mentioned in his plays. Sunday afternoon I learned with Howie in his back yard. Usually our learning is sporadic, but since I got back from Portland it's been very consistent. We've getting pretty close to the end of Baba Kama after many, many years. Then after that I set up a table in the back yard and invited Larry Moss to come over and finish off the leftovers from Friday night with me. When I visited Reva and her kids a couple of weeks ago I suggested that Abe and Nathaniel could come down by themselves to visit me. On Monday Reva texted me to ask if this was a good week for that, and seeing as how I am a retired person sitting at home during a pandemic, my schedule was not too full, and so I invited them for the next day. I met Abe and Nathaniel at the train and brought them back to Greenleaf. Avi joined us for a Sri Lankan chicken curry, and the next day we walked over to her yard to visit with the chickens and collect eggs. Nathaniel carefully brought the eggs he found home to Milwaukee. Later we went over to the beach and splashed around. I put them back on the northbound train, and Reva reports that they said they had a good time. Then Avi fell off her bike at speed while coming home from Esther's house and broke her shoulder blade. Luckily the latest from the orthopod is that it is very minor, and doesn't even need a sling. Meantime I finished a delightful collection of short stories in Catalan, continued slogging away at a novel in Sinhala, and had my weekly language lessons on Zoom. May we all have a great Fourth of July and Shabbat Shalom! |
