| After a few days in Colombo, I'm back in Kandy, which is one of my favorite places in Sri Lanka. I'm visiting with friends today and then tomorrow evening I start my Sinhala lessons. The jewel of the town is an artificial lake, built by the last King of Kandy. On its shore is a building that I think was a bathhouse for the royal ladies. It has been under repairs for the last year or two, and was surrounded by scaffolding, but now the work is done, and it is beautiful. Despite the global concern over the coronavirus, there are quite a few tourists here, and even a number of Americans. It seems like the number of people who make it here from the US has been increasing a bit in recent years. But it still surprises me every time I hear an American accent. |
